There have been several physicists who have brought important inventions to the world which have changed the way how the things are perceived. In this write-up, we have thrown some light on the lives of such great personalities and their contribution in the field of Physics. Read further to know more about them:
1. Galileo Galilei
Galileo was born in Pisa during the year 1564 and was initially trained to become a doctor. Right after he heard about the invention of telescope in 1609, he ventured out to build one on his own. After this, he improvised his astronomy skills and revealed the existence of sunspots and a pitted, mountainous surface on the moon. His studies provided a great support for discovering that the Earth revolves around the Sun and acted as a groundwork for some of the Newton’s discoveries. However, during his experiments, he was consistently troubled by the Catholic church and was made to abandon his residence.
2. Niels Bohr
Born in Copenhagen, Niels Bohr was the brain child behind the development of the modern idea of an atom which consists of a nucleus present at the centre with electrons that keep revolving around it. His work on the atoms earned him a Nobel prize in the year 1922. He also founded the Institute of Theoretical Physics, also referred to as the Niels Bohr Institute and is located in the University of Copenhagen.
3. Issac Newton
Newton has been a major contributor to the science of optics and was a mathematician as well who co-invented calculus. He was born in Lincolnshire, and discovered the laws of mechanics that now form the foundation for the studies under classical physics. Above all, Newton’s major contribution also includes the principle of gravity, which is the basis of the fact how the planets revolve around the sun. He is also said to have achieved excellence in the fields of economics, christian theology, alchemy, astronomy, and mathematics. During his professional career, he was honoured by the presidency of the Royal Society.
4. Albert Einstein
Born in Germany, he was initially regarded as dumb due to his slow learning abilities, but who knew that he would contribute to some of the greatest discoveries of all time. Albert Einstein has majorly worked in the fields of quantum physics, relativity, and gravitation and received the Nobel Prize in Physics in the year 1921. His work showed that space and time are not immutable and are rather fluid and malleable.
5. Michael Faraday
Faraday was born in a poor family and was largely self-educated. He worked under the vicinity of one of the greatest chemists of all time i.e., Humphry Davy and discovered the new compound of chlorine and carbon. He worked significantly on the electromagnetic field, and eventually discovered the laws of electrolysis and electromagnetic induction. His contributions later on lead to the invention of electric motor.
