North Sentinel Island, Andaman Islands
This small and heavily forested island is entirely encircled by the coral reef, making it difficult to approach. But, its inaccessibility is not the main hindrance to visit this place; the isle is inhabited by an indigenous tribe known as the Sentinelese, who have rejected all sort of connection with the outside world, being one of the world’s last communities to remain untouched by modern civilization. They are so much rigid regarding their isolation that they even kill people who try to make any connection with them and approach any of the nearby areas. Furthermore, after the massive 2004 tsunami, government helicopters assessing the damage in the area were attacked by the Sentinelese through arrows and stones as the aircraft flew over the isle.
Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion, Ethiopia
This church houses the most sacred biblical object, the original Ark of the covenant. Therefore, only a specially chosen monk has the privilege to enter this church. According to legends, the Ark was brought to the church with Menelik I, the first Solomonic emperor of Ethiopia, after he visited his father. The guardian monk of the place is appointed by the predecessor one before he dies. And, if the existing guardian dies without nominating a new one, then the monks of the monastery hold an election for the same. The chosen monk has to serve the church for his entire life and be confined only to the chapel.
Snake Island, Brazil
It is a 43-hectare island located at the Brazilian coastline. The place is home of the world’s most deadly species of snakes, including the Golden Lancehead Viper, whose venom can melt even the human flesh. There are more than 4,000 of them on the island. And, the Brazilian government has banned civilians from setting their foot over there. However, a handful of scientists are permitted every year in order to study the snakes, while no one else is allowed to visit the island.
Poveglia Island, Italy
It is a small isle located between Venice and Lido. This place is now completely uninhabited as people believe it to be haunted by the ghosts of plague victims. However, throughout its history, the island has been a quarantine station for the Bubonic Plague. But, now it’s no wonder that Poveglia is considered as one of the most haunted places on earth. However, In 2014, the Italian government offered the island up for a long-term lease of 99 years in the hope that someone would redevelop the land. But, the haunted stories of the place, kept people away from it.
Heard Island Volcano, Australia
This barren volcanic island is considered one of the most remote places on earth. The 368 square-mile of mountainous range comprises forty one huge glaciers and is home to several wildlife species, including seals, penguins, and marine birds. Moreover, in 2000, the University of Hawaii found lava flowing from a 2,745-foot-high active volcano. Besides the danger due to the existing volcano, the weather on the island is extremely poor and highly unpredictable. Plus, it is a minimum two-week sail away from any other major land mass, thus regarded as one of the most dangerous, and hardest places in the world to access.
Ise Grand Shrine, Japan
Located in Uji-tachi, a Japanese town, this Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess, Amaterasu-omikami. The complex consists of two main shrines and around one hundred and twenty five secondary shrines. Though this entire holy place is said to have been existing since the third century, the standing structures are dismantled and replaced after every 20 years, due to the Shinto beliefs of death and renewal. Moreover, it is believed that one of the main shrines comprises a ‘Sacred Mirror,’ called Yata no Kagami, part of the Imperial Regalia of Japan. The access to this region is restricted and only certain priest and priestess, who are members of the Japanese Imperial Family, are allowed to enter it.
Lascaux Caves, France
